Reconstruction By: 9/9/2013 1. Columbian historian Eric Foner (1983) quotes W. E. B. Dubois in calling reconstruction a â€Å"splendid failure (p.16).† After studying the events of late 19th century, defend whether or not you agree with his position. What are the long-term implications? In my opinion the one of the largest mistakes that was made was the amount of racism that still continued in America. Still to this day there is a large amount of racism in America, the only difference is it is not just between white and blacks. When it comes to racism for some reason it seems all races and all people can’t just get along. Growing up in the south I have seen this first hand. The problem is now if there is any kinds of disagreement between races it is blown way out of proportion. A small example would be the Travon Martin case. This case should of not had half of the publicity it did, but because it was a crime that was white on black people took it as a hate crime. The problem in my opinion is it w as not even white on black and half of America still seems to think it was. When people get something in there heads they are going to put their own â€Å"twist† on what they think happened and it will cause things to get out of hand. I believe the Emancipation Proclamation was intended to be the right step in fixing a problem. The problem still existed because even when it comes to law officials there is racism to this day. I have seen police officers that treat people that are not the same race as them differently because that is the way they were raised. That to me is something that is unacceptable, if you are a police officer or a person in a similar position and they still are using race to make decisions it creates more problems in the first place. On the other side some people attempt to use their race to benefit themselves because they are a minority. I went to school with a young African American that was picked on because of the color of his skin, he was new to our school and was moved into our school because his school was flooded when a hurricane came and flooded his school. Some students saw a chance to pick on someone because they were different, they talk, look, and act different than others. I saw this happening and became friends with him because I do not believe in this at all. Another student  that came in wanted to play sports and thought he was the best player on the field. He did not make the team and he filed a complaint with the state of North Carolina saying the reason he did not make the team was because of his race. He was then transferred from our school to be given a chance to play somewhere else. To me this was someone trying to take advantage of their race in a negative way simply because the student did not get his way to begin with. 4. Identify one significant leader in the Populist movement and give a brief synopsis of this person’s contributions, failures, and successes in bringing about the ideas of populism â€Å"In 1890 Populists won control of the Kansas state legislature, and Kansan William Peffer became the party’s first U.S. Senator. Peffer, with his long white beard, was a humorous figure to many Eastern journalists and politicians, who saw little evidence of Populism in their states and often treated the party as a joke† (â€Å"1890†, 2000). Western and Southern Populists gained a large amount of support even though the other parties felt this way. Populists presidential candidate, James B. Weaver actually was able to win over one million votes. Because of fraud, intimidation, and violence by the Southern Democrats the party still failed to make any further gains. One of the largest pieces of success was the party being officially founded because of the merger of the Farmers’ Alliance and the Knights of Labor. Because of all the negative things going on because of the Democrat and Republicans all going against the Populist party it made it very hard to continue this party and keep it functioning. â€Å"Two main factions had appeared. One, the fusion Populists, sought to merge with the Democrats, using the threat of independent organization to force changes in the major party’s platform. The Populist organization in Kansas had already â€Å"fused†Ã¢â‚¬â€œover the bitter protest of those who considered this a sell-out. Fusionists argued that the regionally based third party could never hold national power; the best strategy was to influence a major party that could† (â€Å"1890†, 2000). The Second faction was called â€Å"mid-roaders† and suspected that Democratic leaders wanted to destroy the third-party threat. The Populists party also wanted to schedule the national convention before the Republican and Democrats were able to hold theirs. This would be a fight that was lost and they would have to hold their meeting after the major-party meetings. In my opinion the larger parties where using their size and power to make it very difficult for the Populists party to stay in tact and eventually got what they wanted when it was done away with. The Populists began serving more as a symbol for the Republicans and their nomination that the Populists put through would even begin to ignore the party even though they were the ones who nominated him. Paradise Lost by John Milton Essay

1 – ‘Language has the ability to make sin look attractive’ Tis Pity was published by John Ford in 1633 and is set in Italy, the heart of the Renassiance. John Milton published Paradise Lost in 1667, relatively soon after John Ford, and was the first epic poem to be written in blank verse. Both writers push the boundaries of literature by exploring untouched, taboo subjects: incest and The Fall of Man. During this period of time, soon after the Renassiance period, many artists and writers were challenging society by introducing a range of different styles and genres. This meant that Ford and Milton both intended to tempt controversy through their pieces of literature; yet, the seductive choice of language has instead caused an attractiveness to both texts. It is this attraction to the language, and utter skill behind these writer’s intentions, that has enabled both texts to withstand the test of time. In Book Nine of Paradise Lost, Milton begins to introduce Satan as the Serpent; however, he manages to draw the audience away from Satan’s intentions by presenting his physical beauty. As the Serpent ‘Addressed his way’ towards Eve, with the desire to cause corruption, he moves ‘not with intended wave’. Instead, he towers ‘fould above fould a surging Maze’, with the colours of ‘Verdant Gold’. By giving the Serpent distinct characteristics, he is separating him from the other creatures in the Garden of Eden, therefore drawing Eve’s attention to his uniqueness. The repetition of ‘fould above fould’ gives the sense of an illusion, something which Eve’s eyesight is unable to comprehend; which is then reinforced by ‘surging Maze’, giving this illusion speed and power, causing a greater confusion on Eve’s behalf. The vivid description of ‘verdant Gold’ gives the Serpent a very rich colouring, thus reiterating his importance in the Garden. When Satan finally decides to confront Eve, he becomes ‘erect’, giving himself a sense of empowerment. This is when Milton’s narration confirms the beauty of his language, as he mentions how ‘pleasing was his shape / and lovely’. For an audience, this outside interpretation almost gives a sense of comfort, as they too are lost in his physical beauty. Finally, as the Serpent begins to speak, his ability to compliment and seduce enables him to make his way ‘into the heart of Eve’. There are clear similarites between Satan in Paradise Lost and Vasques in Tis Pity: both have a masterful use of rhetoric. As Vasque attempts to gather information from Putana, he mentions how her – by proving themselves  to be devoted to these women, they are appealing to their naivity and giving a false sense of trust. Their seductive use of language causes them to become ‘impassioned’, as they begin to realise their ability to attract these women. The absence and withdrawal of language in both texts is equally as attractive to an audience. In Paradise Lost Book Nine, the pivotal point when Eve eats the Forbidden Fruit is simply expressed in four words, ‘she plucked, she eat’. The use of these monosyllables reinforces how emphasis can be achieved through simplicity. Extending on this further, Milton’s constant elaboration and care to detail is deliberately dismissed here to send an even greater message to his audience: mankind cannot blame Eve for causing the Fall as she simply ‘ate’ the fruit. By refusing to focus on Eve’s decision to eat the Fruit, he is daringly challenging conventional views that women are the only cause of sin. John Ford in Tis Pity has a similar intention through his portrayal of Hippolyta; her refusal to be silenced goes against the view of women’s inferiority. This is achieved in Act Two Scene two, as she powerfully enters with ‘Tis I;’. These two words are separate from the rest of her speech in order to hold suspense and give her a greater presence on stage. Ford’s intention is for the audience to immediately be drawn to her in preparation for her criticism towards Soranzo. As both Ford and Milton are so skilled in writing ‘attractively’ and deliberately trying to engage an audience, it is even more effective when they suddenly withdraw; the audience become responsible in using their own imagination, in attempt to understand the message these writers intend to express. In Tis Pity, the most effective use of language is through convincing an audience that Giovanni and Annabella have a natural, loving relationship. In Act One Scene Two, when Giovanni admits his love for Annabella and she responds evenly, he ends the scene with ‘After so many tears as we have wept, let’s learn to court in smiles , to kiss and sleep’. Finally Giovanni is no longer impassioned, ‘I have too long suppressed the hidden flames’, and is instead able to appreciate the natural rawness of their love. Not only that, but by referring to their ability to ‘weep, smile, kiss and sleep’, he is expressing emotions which audiences are able to relate to; proving that their relationship isn’t as unnatural as first assumed. During this particular moment, the audience become so engaged in the text that they forget about the theme of incest and instead support the  purity of their relationship. John Milton’s depiction of Satan creates a similar sense of curiosity into the ability to sympathise with him. This is highlighted when he observes Eve for the first time and becomes ‘of enmitie disarm’d/ of guile, of hate, of envie, of revenge’. The repetition of ‘guile, hate, envie, revenge’ proves how Satan is gradually striped of his emotions associated with evil, and is instead left vulnerable through his admiration. The power of Eve’s beauty forces him to become ‘abstracted’ from his own evil, thus demonstrating the ability to respond humanely. During this moment, Milton is allowing the audience the opportunity to make their own viewpoint of Satan; isolated from the conventional, one-dimensial presentation of him. The beauty of both texts is not caused by convincing the audience that sin is ‘attractive’, but instead pushing them into sympathising, admiring and simply enjoying pieces of literature beyond expectation.

Monotony in Elisa’s life Essay Many people in our modern society lead monotonous lives; in other words they follow a routine and have little or no excitement in their lives. Sometimes we fool ourselves by believing that a monotonous life is happy life, but it does not work the same way for every person. Leading a monotonous life can be very harmful to one’s well being and those around us. In the short story â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† by John Steinbeck we see a person who finds herself in this situation, following a daily routine without much change in it. When a person realizes that they have been living a boring life they start to feel dissatisfied with what they have accomplished, act on impulse and even resort to different activities in an attempt to escape from reality. It often happens that people neglect themselves and do not do anything to satisfy their inner desires which later turn into regret. Regret is the effect that comes from not doing that which you want to do, not realizing your dreams or even from making the wrong decision. If a person strictly follows a routine it happens that they refuse to relax or have fun because it can affect their work or lives. These people are followed by a feeling of unaccomplishment which can lead to sorrow and sadness. The problem is that you start repeating this cycle that does not really benefit your health, it may benefit others and improve your work or studies but you always have to take into consideration your well being. Regret is a very powerful emotion and can carry on for years if a person is not careful it can gravely affect their state of mind and create many complexes. In â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† the character of Elisa is a perfect example of someone who leads a monotonous life. Elisa is tired of her life because she feels tired of the same issues every day, caring for her garden being a wife and even dealing with an awkward husband. Elisa regrets not living a more exciting life. In the story, the traveling handyman when talking with Elisa asks her for some chrysanthemums seeds and a very interesting conversation comes up. Elisa tries to explain to him how to care for the chrysanthemums by explaining the feeling of how you do it, but they interpret the explanation as something sexual. Elisa gets aroused by the conversation and tries to touch the man’s leg in the heat, but resists herself in the end. This leaves me to think that maybe she feels unsatisfied in her marriage, she desires something, regrets not having this exciting life. By using the same example we can also relate the situation to how living in this monotony can make a person act on impulse. To act on impulse is to give in to your deepest desires, to follow your urges; it is the drive for what we do. This impulsive behavior surfaces from the situation, since Elisa cannot hold her desire she breaks down and almost does something she might have regretted later on. Jane Atkinson states, When a man youve never met before suddenly gives you flowers dont be alarmed hes only acting on Impulse (Atkinson). What I’m trying to say is that acting on impulse is like taking a risk. What we have in the quote is basically that, the man is probably nervous and thinking that the woman will not accept them or feel harassed, but he takes a risk, acts on impulse, without completely thinking about the consequences of his actions. Many people live an entire life by acting on impulse without thinking about the consequences, but it is a fact that sometimes you could end up with a very complicated situation. Sometimes acting on impulse is not bad, but you cannot go over the top, there needs to be a balance between the two. Elisa, for a single moment, acted according to what her body wanted, but at the last moment realized that what she was going to do might have caused big problems later on. Basically acting on impulse is not exactly a bad thing, but in Elisa’s case, where the impulses come out of regret, it is a very severe problem. If you act on impulse you will not just cause harm to yourself, but to those around you too. The human being when cornered in a situation tends to look for an easy way to get out of this situation; this is the meaning of escaping from reality. The easy way out may be an efficient one, but in the long run may end up being the worst since it is the most dangerous for your health. Elisa’s monotonous live creates the perfect situation to make a person desire to escape. To escape from reality one uses an activity or an object which aids the person to create a more comfortable scenario. Many people use drugs to escape from reality, alcohol is one of the most common since it makes you see everything in a different way. Elisa is already mentally affected due to her dull, monotonous life and to make it worst the traveling handyman reminds her that her life will probably be the same until her death. By analyzing Elisa’s behavior from the story we can infer that she has been using the chrysanthemums garden as a way to bury in all her feelings and hide all her sadness, but nearing the end of the story when Elisa and her husband are on their way to the restaurant she asks if they could buy some wine, her second attempt to escape from reality. Elisa wants to use alcohol to escape from the sadness she was feeling; we can also assume that from this point on Elisa might develop a drinking problem due to the constant use of alcohol to alleviate the sadness. Escaping from reality might ease the pain inside one’s heart, but it cannot resolve any problems. Also there is also the fact that Elisa is living in a rather sexist society. Ott, Jim states, â€Å"Its the enigmatic tale of a woman named Elisa who loves her husband, but is fenced in by geography and circumstances in a mans world†. In the quote we basically have a summary of the story, but we mainly focus in the part where it says â€Å"in a man’s world† meaning that Elisa is being seen as weak and defenseless and treated as inferior. If a person constantly escapes from reality and never confronts his problems they will just make things worst since the problems will pile up and become even more complicated. In the end it just goes back to the same saying that everything in excess can be deadly. Leading a monotonous life can be harmful to a person’s well being. Monotony makes people feel dissatisfied, makes them act illogically and can even throw them into a deep depression. But there are also people who believe that it does not cause harm and that it can even be good for your health. Leading a monotonous life does not physically injure anyone and as long as a person does not take it to extreme measures then it does not cause any harm. There is also the fact that nobody has died because of monotony and it is not even a disease. However there are many factors that can make this seemingly normal way of life a deadly one. Even if it is not a disease it acts like one by obstructing your way of thinking, affect your judgment and more. It is true that as long as you do not do anything extreme then it will not cause much harm, but the problem is that not everyone understands this, most people just take it to the extreme or just do not do anything at all. Of course monotony cannot kill a person, but it can drive one into suicide easily since there are many people with weak minds and hearts who get overtaken by the feeling and do rash things without taking everything into account. In other words although monotony is not a deadly disease it can be harmful because it works it affects the weakest part of the body which is the mind. To live on a routine may sound like a completely normal and healthy activity, but, like everything, if you surpass a certain limit it can have the exact opposite meaning and effects on a person’s life. Once you put the facts in monotony can cause great harm like in Elisa’s case, but it can have the exact opposite effect too. Gregory J. Palmerino states, â€Å"In the end, both husband and wife bear responsibility and suffer for their seemingly childless and sexless marriage; the punishment, however, appears to be meted out unfairly† (Palmerino). This one quote basically sums up everything I want say about the story. Elisa and her husband are only making their problems worst and have many regrets and secrets or rather untold opinions of one another that are yet to be said aloud. The only real problem in all of this is the fact that their punishment really is being meted out unfairly since Elisa is getting the short end of the stick because she is being oppressed by her status as a woman and because of the fact that even though she is extremely unhappy she cannot do anything about it. The thing about Elisa’s lifestyle is that one thing leads to another, since she is living a monotonous life she regrets not doing many things and thus tends to act on impulse to try and accomplish these unfulfilled desires and lastly since she cannot fulfill these desires she resorts to the use of other objects to ease the pain in her heart. Currently, there are hundreds of websites widely available to consumers to download and stream movies at a lesser cost, making it a popular among consumers in most parts of the world. Technologies such as Placeshifting, which allows anyone with a broadband Internet connection to have video streams from their home television set or personal video recorder (PVR) forwarded for viewing at any location where they have a computer display and a high-speed Internet connection, [12] is a major benefit to people with busy schedules outside home. These have caused a massive impact on the movie industry, which has created a lot of competition among DVD rental companies and as well as movie theatres. [13] According to the report Online Movies: A Global Strategic Business report presented by Global Industry Analysts, the world online movie market is expected to grow up to $ 4.44 billions by 2017. The rapid increase of movie downloads through the Internet is a result of wide availability and introduction in more advanced broadband facilities with computers consisting of hard drives with a larger capacity. [11] 3.1 Key Players The growing trend in the online movie industry has created a considerable number of players in the market. The following analysis is based on the key players that are currently competing among each other. Netflix The movie renting was taken to a new level when Netflix introduced their home delivery service to the customers, which created a competitive advantage over many other movie rental services. Thereafter, Netflix introduced the option of accessing unlimited video streaming online to the customers without having to rent DVDs. [6] They also have signed a $ 1 billion deal with Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lions Gate for their content to be added to the services. [6] Netflix recently announced they would be reducing the number of DVDs mailed out than the year before, as there was an 86% increase in the quarterly profits of online movie streaming. [6] But the company also stated that there is a possibility of a substantial increase in the license cost of content to its streaming services by the second quarter. [7] VUDU VUDU is a service where recent movies are supplied on demand without a monthly subscription or contract. [19] The consumers only have to pay a fee of US$ 2/- per movie rented for 02 nights. According to Pogue, 2010 it is a set top box that connects to the Internet, which provides a vast range movies that arrives on the same day the movies come out on DVDs. [8] They recently developed their system by collaborating with other companies such as LG, Samsung and Mitsubishi, where the same service is built into the TVs and Blu-Ray players. [8] Redbox This is a movie rental service available in the form of kiosks all over the United States. There are over 27,000 kiosks located nationwide in most convenient places for consumers such as grocery stores and convenience shops. Consumers are able to reserve movies online or through the Redbox i-phone application, making it possible to rent on the run. [a] He stated that online movie streaming has become more popular among the younger generation and most viewers are quite comfortable with watching the latest releases online or on DVD rather than in the cinema. However, he also stated that this is also affected by the time taken for a movie to be shown in Sri Lankan cinemas compared to the time of the worldwide releases. The impact on consumer behaviour by online movie streaming and rentals can be explained through the concept Diffusion of Innovation, which is the process by which the acceptance of an innovation over a period of time is spread by communication to members of a social system. [16] Not all new products or services have the potential to be accepted by consumers. However, the online movie streaming and rental market has managed to capture a large audience through the following characteristics that have an influence on the consumer acceptance of new products. 4.1 Relative Advantage This is the degree to which potential consumers perceive a new product as superior to existing substitutes. Consumers have come a long way from going to a movie theatre on a Saturday night with friends to merely renting out a movie from Blockbuster and watching it right at home. The present has become even more advanced that they do not even have to go out to rent a movie but get the DVD delivered to their doorstep. This type of convenient methods were as previously discussed, was made possible by billion dollar companies such as Netflix where renting a movie is just one click away. Most consumers prefer convenience, which reduces the time factor in making purchasing decisions. For instance, the movies those are available for rental will be displayed online in contrast to a scenario where the consumers have to be disappointed when the required DVD is not available in a movie rental store or a kiosk. Also, all these Internet services are easily accessible in terms of feasibility. 4.2 Compatibility This is the degree to which potential consumers feel a new product is consistent with their present needs, values and practices. Most consumers sought alternatives for entrainment and adopted to low cost or in some cases free services such as streaming and renting movies online. 5.0 Findings Discussion According to Theatrical Statistics, although the U.S. / Canada box office releases have increased by 15% in 2010 over the past 5 years, the movie admissions or tickets sold have declined by 5% compared to 2008 level. [4] In contrast to the above research findings, one may argue that the excitement of attending a movie theatre and experiencing it on a wide screen with a surround sound system cannot be compared to the same on a home movie entertainment system. Although most cinemas are struggling to attract more moviegoers, new technologies such as 3D movies have attracted a considerable amount of consumers. At least one 3D movie was viewed by more than one in three people in the U.S. / Canada in 2010. [4] However, 3D viewing is highly correlated by demographic categories where it is more popular among the youngsters when compared to the age category of over 40 years. [4] According to the survey carried out 82% of the participants stated that they download movies most of the time where 7% stated that they watch movies at movie theatres. They were also asked to give out reasons as to why they prefer each mode to the other, and 69% of the participants responded stating that the frequency of movie released in Sri Lanka are low and by the time they are released the movies are already out on DVD or available online. [Appendix 1] However, these data is only limited to a few number of participants and is intricate to limit to a certain demographical sector. There are also downfalls to the high frequency of consumers streaming movies online. For instance, unnecessary harmful bugs and viruses can be transmitted through unsecured websites and request for personal financial information of the consumers resulting in installing malware on users computers. [3] It is often encountered that cybercrooks advertise on-demand movies where the users are asked to download anti-virus security software that that helps users to download movies automatically without the consent of the user thus resulting in movie fans to be exposed to unauthorised and illegal content as well as malvertising  [2]  and malicious code downloaded with streamed movies. [3] 6.0 Recommendations Strategic Response to Changes in the Movie Industry The digital advancements have made changes in the industry in many means mainly creating a competitive environment among movie rental companies. Most companies such as Blockbuster movie rentals and movie theatres have gone out of business as Internet has cultivated a change in consumer behaviour. As a result of online rental facilities, consumers do not have to worry about renting out a movie from a store and returning it the next morning to avoid late fee charges. However, in response, AMC theatres recently announced that they would be updating the MovieWatcher rewards program by replacing it in response to the frequent requests by audience for richer rewards. [1] This is an attempt to attract more moviegoers to theatres in an environment of films being widely available through the Internet and videos-on-demand. It is recommended for the marketers within the industry to follow these types of methods in order to retain the moviegoer audience and increase the frequency in terms of cinema attendance. More serious concerns have raised such as copyright issues and during the interview carried out with Mr. Thissa Nagodavithana stated that, although he is in possession of the copyrights of old Sinhala movie broadcasting, most websites that stream videos online illegally uploads pirated copies making it difficult to preserve copyrights to them. [b] [3] As a strategic response, it can be recommended for the marketers in the industry to keep up with the new technologies and introduce new products and market launches in order to adapt to these changes taken place in the movie industry. Furthermore, it has been brought into notice that there is a major cost reduction in using digital technologies in movie making rather than putting them up in film, which is cheaper to shoot, cut and duplicate. [2] This could be a major advantage for cinema owner where piracy has become a huge problem in making profits. 7.0 Conclusion Online movie streaming and rental trend has caused drastic changes in the movie industry as well as a major impact on consumer behaviour. A lot of competition among key players in the online market had risen making companies such as Blockbuster and cinemas go out of business. For the survival of the industry strategic responses should be carried out through adapting to new technologies and introducing new launches. Marketing professionals attached to the industry should adapt to these changes by improving their skills, attitudes and behaviour and cater to their audience accordingly. Just as the speaker describes the specific moment, the crowd is lost in this moment. They are not thinking of debt or financial problems, only the ever-moving dance. The dance becomes more wild and out of tune. The dancers never loose their love or passion, only their rhythm. They are fat and off balance, but they keep on dancing. â€Å"Those shanks must be sound to bear up under such rollicking measures† (10-11). Williams’s poem shows us that life is beautiful in the most ordinary ways. The speaker depicts ordinary people dancing in great detail. We see the splendor of a simple event. We see the life worth living. This parallels Williams’s belief that poetry is â€Å"equipment for living.† The speaker actually advises readers to live with the same enthusiasm as the dancers in Brueghel’s painting. â€Å"Prance as the dance in Brueghel’s great picture, The Kermess† (11-12). My daughter Vanessa Rose was born on May 13, 2005, she weighed 7 pounds, she was 20 inches long, and born at 6:15 in the morning. She is now 2 Â ½ years old. I got her first name Vanessa from the little mermaid from the evil girl that took Ariel’s voice away from her and tried to steal her prince. I got her middle name Rose from the flower. It’s my favorite flower and it fit with her first name. Vanessa and I have a really close bond. We enjoy playing on her little computer, playing blocks, teaching her colors, teaching her the alphabet, and her numbers and shapes. She’s very active and loves to help clean, read books, color, and dance. There’s never a day that she sits still. Federalism As a System of Government - Essay Example The present research has identified that federalism promotes diversity in the system by allowing states and provinces to devise their own policies in matters related to public welfare such as education, health, and agriculture whereas at the same time it also ensures the unity among the various units of the states by giving the national responsibilities like currency, foreign affairs and defense to the central government. Federalism creates a very healthy political environment in the country which ensures political activity at the grass root level as well because the system of provincial and the system of local governments directly involve people in political activity. In this way people get to know about correct policy making and various policies can be tested in the country at the same time; better political grooming ensures better political leaders as well. Due to the disintegration of powers to various systems of governments reaching the grass root level through local and provinc ial governments, federalism provides a system in which good governance can be ensured. Each government has its own responsibility, federal government is responsible for the security of the country, provincial governments are responsible for the welfare of the public whereas local governments are responsible for providing services to the public; in this way the duties are divided and governments can work with greater efficiency and their performance is greatly enhanced. ... Federalism has turned out to be a very successful system of government however it has certain disadvantages as well. It allows certain disorderly members of the society to manipulate laws of taxation on various different commodities by purchasing and using them in different states because the government cannot impose tax or duty on interprovincial transfer of goods. The diversity in other laws which include laws related to criminal offense also allows the wrongdoers to escape punishment by moving to another state where the offense is not punishable under law. The laws related to social contract like marriage and inheritance are also exploited by people due to diversity among them in provinces and states. In certain situations the system of federal government allows interstate conflict to occur because certain projects related to natural resources and infrastructure which are beneficial for one state can affect people and the interests of any other state, in such a situation a riv alry between the states is promoted and thus the spirit of nationalism is greatly damaged. Federalism very often leads to disputes between states over the division of resources and responsibilities among the states. The federal system of government with its all system of governments is economically very costly to support because there is a large number of elected representatives and officials in the government which are salaried by tax money (Freely and Rubin). The presence of three parallel systems of government also creates complexity in the governance.
